Mission
and Goals
Children who read at an early age and who do so regularly for pleasure are more
likely to grow up healthy, caring and responsible. With that in mind, The Foundation
for Monterey County provides funding to selected programs of the Monterey County
Free Libraries.
The Foundation supports a wide variety of library programs to improve literacy
and provide equal access to information for all county residents.
The Foundation is a nonprofit charity supported by individuals, community groups
and other foundations that collectively appreciate the wonder, the power and
the joy of reading.

History
The Foundation for Monterey County Free Libraries was founded with the goal of
supporting vital enhancement programs for the Monterey County Free Libraries.
In 1989, Mark Massel left a $100,000 bequest to the county libraries. The head
librarian at the time, Dallas Shaffer, had a vision of using the funds to create
an institution that would support the local libraries for years to come.
Shaffer and a group of concerned citizens founded the Foundation for Monterey
County Free Libraries. Since then, the Foundation has donated more than $2.5
million to support vital literacy programs not traditionally provided through
libraries.
