Carl Nolte is a San Francisco Chronicle reporter and columnist.  He is a fourth generation San Franciscan, educated in local schools and the University of San Francisco. At present, he is a reporter covering California and the west and writes a column about San Francisco called Native Son, which appears on Sundays.

He has been an editor and reporter for over 45 years and has covered everything from baseball to two wars in the Persian Gulf region.  His coverage of the 1991 Persian Gulf war won an award from the World Affairs Council of Northern California and he was embedded with the U.S. Army's Third Infantry Division in combat during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He also sailed aboard the Liberty Ship Jeremiah O'Brien with a crew of veterans from San Francisco to France to cover the 50th anniversary of D-Day  He served in the crew of the ship and at the end of the voyage was discharged as an able seaman.

Nolte has written three books, most recently "The San Francisco Century, How the city rose from the ashes of the 1906 earthquake" published in 2005.  He has won several awards, including the President's Medal for Public Servicefrom USF.  He has two grown daughters and lives in San Francisco with his wife, Darlene Plumtree.
